During your lifetime, you will buy plenty of mattresses to replace older ones. When that’s the case, you will need to learn the do’s and don’ts of storing a mattress. Due to health reasons, we are advised to replace older models with newer ones. While it generally depends on the model as to how long it will last, you will eventually buy a new one.
But if you feel there is still use to your old mattress, then here is how to store it.
Do: Clean It First
Mattresses absorb plenty of things. From our body odor to our sweat, they can be nasty at some times. That’s why the first thing you should do is thoroughly clean it. When it comes to cleaning the mattress, grab a vacuum cleaner and go through both sides. This will do a good job of absorbing all the odors and sweat that has accumulated throughout the years.
As a general rule of thumb, most people like to use baking soda when cleaning their mattresses. Once you’ve vacuumed the unit, spray baking soda and let it sit for a day. If by chance you’re using a liquid solution instead of baking soda, then you need to let it dry first.
Don’t: Wrap In Plastic
You will have to wrap the mattress when storing it. But if plastic is your first guess, then you’re making a mistake. Plastic isn’t good for your mattress. While most of you think it is the right way to go, it isn’t.
Instead, use what everyone uses – mattress cover. Plastic works counterproductively in your ability to store it properly. A mattress cover is lighter and tighter – preventing the release of air. So it would be a shame to wrap your old and good mattress in plastic.
With all that said, your goal is to use the mattress as much as you can before eventually storing it. To get the most out of your Saatva mattress, make sure you’re buying from the right place.
Do: Lay It Flat
Most of you might have storage issues. This isn’t the best position to find yourself in when needing to store your old mattress. But that’s okay, you can store it on its side, right? Absolutely not. The more your mattress sits on any side, the more the coils and springs get damaged.
Mattresses are meant to lay flat as this is the natural position they are meant to be in. Even if you’re storing more expensive mattresses like memory foam mattresses, it will cause the material to shift. So never sit it on its side, always lay it flat.
Don’t: Place Stuff On It
Much like sitting it on its side, placing items on top of your mattress isn’t the proper way to store it. What this does is keep pressure on the unit and all that pressure will eventually damage it. The springs and coils might go flat, and the memory foam will adjust to the constant pressure – leaving a big giant hole in the mattress.
It’s a mistake to avoid making at all times. By now, you’ve probably concluded that storage space is essential when storing your mattress. So before you do any of what we said, make sure you have the necessary storage space to accommodate your old mattress.
